How to Export Claude Design Projects Before December 14

The Hostsmith team
ClaudeAIClaude DesignHosting

The standalone Claude Design at claude.ai/design goes read-only on December 14, 2026, and every public link to a project there stops working that day. The way out: move each project into Claude, where it becomes an artifact, or download it as a .zip from Share > Project HTML > Project archive > Export. Better, do both. Still have people opening the old link? Put the zip on a host and send them the new address.

Quick version: save what matters from the chats, download everything, move what you'll keep editing.

Checked October 30, 2026, against Anthropic's help center. Project moves and the bulk download are still rolling out, so your screen may be ahead of this page.

What happened to Claude Design?

Nothing's gone yet. Claude Design moved into Claude on September 16, 2026, and only the standalone site at claude.ai/design closes, going read-only on December 14. It isn't a shutdown.

  • April 17, 2026: Anthropic Labs launched Claude Design as its own app at claude.ai/design.
  • September 16, 2026: design, deck and doc requests arrived in every Claude conversation, and the release notes put Claude Design on every plan, Free included.

Three doors in now: pick Output > Design under the message box, choose a Design template from the Artifacts tab, or type /design in Claude Code.

Is Claude Design still working? Yes, inside Claude. The old site just stops taking new projects. For new work, the guide to building a website with Claude has the steps. This post is about getting the old projects out.

What closes on December 14, and what you lose

What changes on December 14, checked October 30, 2026 (Anthropic's help center)

CommentsUsableDeleted some time after closingNo
Public linksWorkStop workingNo; re-share or rehost

Three rows trip people up:

Public links die on the day. The help center says public links to standalone projects "will no longer work after it closes." No redirect is documented.

Chats and comments have no export. Copy the decisions and client feedback you need into a doc now. One YouTube walkthrough adds a trick: ask Claude, in each project's chat, to write a decision log as a file in the project, so it goes out with the archive. It's Claude's summary, not a transcript, so paste exact client feedback word for word.

Originals aren't deleted on December 14, whatever some guides say. They're deleted later, no date published. After closing, the owner of an unmoved project can still change its files to fix and move it. Nice safety net, but whether Export works then isn't documented.

Three ways out: move, download or export

Ways out of standalone Claude Design, checked October 30, 2026

Best answer: do both. The move review offers a .zip copy before you confirm. Take it.

Move a project to Claude

  1. Open the project at claude.ai/design. Only its owner can move it.
  2. Start the move from the pop-up or the banner at the top of the project.
  3. Read the review of what moves and what stays, and download the .zip copy it offers.
  4. Confirm, then keep the tab open until the move finishes. Don't close it early.
  5. Open the project in Claude. It's now an artifact on the Artifacts page.

From then on, the standalone copy is read-only for everyone, and the move can't be undone.

Gotcha: up to 60 unmoved projects also show on the Artifacts page, but they still open in the standalone site. Seeing one there doesn't mean it moved.

A moved design is an artifact, so sharing follows the rules in the guide to sharing Claude artifacts. No move option yet? It's still rolling out. Download meanwhile.

Download a Claude Design project archive

  1. Open the project and click Share.
  2. Choose Project HTML (for slide decks, it's under More formats and apps).
  3. Keep Project archive selected and click Export.

You get a .zip of every file in the project, free. There's no Claude Design app to download, by the way: "download" means this archive.

A download of all the projects you own is rolling out with Move to Claude, on the standalone home page. It includes files, not chats or comments, and HIPAA-ready organizations don't get it. Don't see it? Go one project at a time, starting with the ones people open by link.

Export to another format or tool

The Claude Design export menu sits behind the Export button, upper right. It offers Download as .zip; PDF, PPTX, Google Slides and standalone HTML; Handoff to Claude Code; and Send to 15 tools: Adobe Experience Manager, Adobe for Creativity, Adobe Journey Optimizer, Base44, Canva, Gamma, HubSpot, Hyperframes, Lovable, Miro, Netlify, Replit, v0, Vercel and Wix. You won't find Hostsmith there.

Can't see Send to? Anthropic files it under Export, while Vercel's and Netlify's own guides show it under Share. Try both menus before you decide it's missing.

Who can move what: plans and org types

Moving and downloading by plan and organization type, checked October 30, 2026 (Anthropic's help center)

Plan or organizationMove projects?Bulk download?Before Dec 14
FreeNot covered: moves are rolling out to paid plansNot documentedDownload each project; move design systems
Pro or MaxYour own, as the rollout arrivesRolling outDownload everything; move what you'll edit

Owner or Primary OwnerYes, plus Move everything (projects, templates, design systems)Rolling outRun it; check Projects moved to you for people who left

HIPAA-readyNot right nowNoDownload each project
CMEKOne project at a time; no design systems or Move everything yetNot documentedMove one by one
Enterprise with custom retentionYesRolling outOpen moved items within the period

That last row bites. If your retention period covers artifacts, a moved item nobody opens for that period can be permanently deleted. The clock starts at the move and restarts on each open or edit.

Design systems can move today, unlike projects, whose moves are still rolling out, and they top Anthropic's to-do list. One move brings every design system in the organization, anyone who can use Claude Design can start it, and individual plans skip the confirmation step. On the Artifacts page, the banner reads "Claude Design lives here now", with a Move team design systems button (older guides say "Migrate"). Empty and starter-theme systems don't move. Published systems that aren't private arrive shared with the whole organization. On Enterprise, design systems are off by default, so owners may need to switch them on first.

Claude Design to Figma

There's no built-in Claude Design export to Figma. Two vendors, each describing its own tool, fill the gap:

  • html.to.design (Figma plugin): open the File tab and drag in the Project archive .zip. Each page comes in as editable layers. Google Fonts and web-safe fonts render straight away; less common fonts need installing locally.
  • Anima: export standalone HTML and drop it into Buddy, Anima's design agent inside Figma.

Neither needs the standalone site, just the file. Grab the zip before December 14, and the import can wait.

Claude Design to Claude Code

For a design that's becoming real software, use Handoff to Claude Code on the Export menu: Send to local coding agent or Send to Claude Code Web. Anthropic's pitch is that Claude Code builds on what's already in the project, so nobody rebuilds it from a picture. Already in Claude Code? /design imports a design into your codebase.

It's the right exit for a page that's about to sprout more pages. When it does, build it as a multi-page site with Claude Code.

The link dies. The files don't.

Every claude.ai/design link you've sent stops working on December 14, moved or not. So list where they live now, while they still open: client emails, proposals, Notion pages, your portfolio, LinkedIn posts. Then give each one a new home from the table below.

Check the archive before you host it

  1. Unzip it and look. The archive holds every file in the project, which can include uploaded briefs, screenshots and client documents. Anything you host is public. Delete what shouldn't be online and re-zip. New to zips? Here's how to unzip a file on a Mac.
  2. Find index.html. Anthropic doesn't describe the archive's layout, and Vercel's guide plans for exports without one at the top. Hosts serve it at the root, so make sure it's there. If the main page has another name, rename it and fix links that pointed to it.
  3. Single page? Skip the zip. Export standalone HTML, save it as index.html, and host that one HTML file.

Keep an exported design live on Hostsmith

Hostsmith is ours, so weigh this accordingly.

Drop your zipped folder in the Hostsmith dashboard (a zip with one top-level folder gets unwrapped) and you get a live your-site.us.hostsmith.link address. Paste it wherever the old claude.ai link was. When the design changes, upload the new zip to the same site: it replaces the files at the same address, so the link you send today keeps working.

As of October 2026 (pricing):

  • Free: 1 site and 5 MB of storage, which is also the per-file limit, so the zip must be under 5 MB. Hostsmith branding included.
  • Starter, $5/mo billed yearly ($9 monthly): 1 site, 50 MB, no branding, and Private Sites (a shared password or an email whitelist) for a prototype only your client should see. See how to password-protect a website.
  • Pro, $15/mo billed yearly ($21 monthly): 5 sites, 500 MB and 5 custom domains, so designs can live on your own domain.

Rehosting several projects? Each one is its own site: Free and Starter have 1, Pro has 5.

Already moved the design into Claude? Export it from there and upload the same way.

Your December 14 checklist

  1. List every place you've shared a claude.ai/design link.
  2. Move your design systems now. Anyone who can use Claude Design can start it.
  3. Save what you need from chats and comments, or have Claude write a decision log.
  4. Download each archive, or use the bulk download if you have it.
  5. Move the projects you'll keep editing, taking the review's .zip.
  6. Team and Enterprise owners: turn on Artifacts and Design systems, run Move team design systems, then Move everything. Then check the default: on the Artifacts page, open the Claude Design menu, choose View design systems, and use Set as default if the old one didn't carry over.
  7. Host the archives people still open, click through them, then swap the old links.
  8. With custom retention, open moved items within the period.

Frequently asked questions

Is Claude Design still working?

Yes, inside Claude on every plan, Free included. Only the standalone claude.ai/design goes read-only on December 14, 2026.

What's a good Claude Design alternative?

Claude Design itself, now inside Claude. If you're leaving, Figma (through import plugins), Canva and Gamma all take its output. Hostsmith hosts the exported files; it isn't a design tool.

Can I still download a project after December 14?

Anthropic doesn't say. Owners can still change unmoved projects and move them, and originals are deleted later with no date given. Download before.

Do share links survive a move?

No. Standalone public links stop working when the site closes. On Pro and up you can re-share the moved artifact, but Anthropic's help center says viewers need a Claude account, while the Share dialog says they don't; the sharing guide sorts it out. For a link anyone can open, host the export.

Can I move projects on the Free plan?

Moves are rolling out to paid plans, and the help center doesn't mention Free. Download instead.

Does the download include my chats?

No. It includes your files, not your chats or comments.

Menus in this post will probably move again. The zip won't. Grab it now, swap the links people actually click, and on December 14 the only thing that breaks is an address nobody uses anymore.
